The Election Commission has accepted the court’s decision and declared BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as the mayor of Dhaka South, five years after the election.
EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed that the commission issued a gazette appointing him as mayor on Sunday.
The gazette was published after the commission received notification from the law ministry, he added.
A copy of the gazette has been forwarded to the Local Government Division to proceed with the next steps for the swearing-in of the new mayor.
On March 27, Judge Md Nurul Islam of Dhaka District Judge’s Court and the Election Tribunal court declared Ishraque Hossain the mayor of Dhaka South, annulling the 2020 election results in which Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh had been declared the winner.
The government-issued gazette declaring Taposh, who had contested under the boat symbol, as mayor was also revoked.
Ishraque, the son of former mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, was declared mayor as the BNP candidate under the paddy sheaf symbol.
The Dhaka North and South City Corporation elections took place on February 1, 2020.
Awami League’s mayoral candidates Atiqul Islam and Taposh won the elections in Dhaka North and South, respectively, before the EC published the gazette the following day.
They took their oaths and performed their duties until the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, after which they lost their seats.
On March 3, Ishraque filed an appeal to overturn the results of the 2020 Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayoral election, citing charges of irregularities, corruption, and lack of credibility.
