Eight Killed in Kashmir Gunbattles, Police Report

Police in Indian-administered Kashmir reported on Sunday that two soldiers and six suspected militants had died in two different gunbattles.

Inspector general Vidhi Kumar Birdi of the Kashmir police told AFP that in the villages of the Kulgam district, the authorities in the disputed area had “carried out two different operations.”
Conflicts were still going on in the villages of Frisal Chinnigam and Modergram, according to Birdi, who also reported that two security force members had died.

The bodies of four terrorists were found in Frisal Chinnigam and two terrorists from Modergram, according to Birdi.

An increase in attacks in the disputed territory has led to this most recent event.

Both India and Pakistan fully claim Kashmir, which has a Muslim majority. They have also fought three wars to rule the Himalayan area.

Since 1989, rebel organizations have been waging an insurgency, calling for the territory’s independence or union with Pakistan.

Tens of thousands of rebels, troops, and civilians have died in this fight.

When a shooter opened fire on a bus bringing Indian Hindu pilgrims from a shrine in the southern Reasi region in June, nine of them died and numerous more were injured.

It was the first attack on Hindu pilgrims in Kashmir since 2017, when gunmen killed seven people in another bus ambush. It was also one of the bloodiest attacks in recent memory.
