At about 70, renowned sculptor Shamim Sikder passed away in a local hospital on Tuesday. According to family members, she passed away at United Hospital at about 4.30 pm while receiving treatment there.
Shamim Sikder had a number of medical issues, including kidney and heart illness, for a long time. The Bangladesh government awarded the artist the Ekushey Padak in 2000.
To honor Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of the Nation, Shamim erected a sculpture in Dhaka Central Prison in 1974. Shoparjito Shadhinota (1990) and Swadhinata Sangram are two of her other significant works (1999).
When she was 15, Shamim enrolled in the Bulbul Academy of Fine Arts. She relocated to the Sir John Cass School of Art in London in 1976. She taught at the University of Dhaka’s Faculty of Fine Arts from 1980 to 2001.
