Election Commission Briefs OIC Diplomats on Plans for Upcoming National Elections

The Election Commission (EC) held a meeting with the heads of missions from member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to update them on preparations for Bangladesh’s upcoming general election.

The meeting, which took place on Monday at the EC headquarters in Agargaon, was attended by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, three other election commissioners, and the EC secretary.

Invitations were extended to the heads of missions from Afghanistan, Algeria, Brunei Darussalam, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Malaysia, Maldives, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates.

During the meeting, the EC briefed the diplomats on the progress of election preparations and sought their support in registering expatriate Bangladeshis as voters and implementing a voting system for overseas citizens, according to EC officials.

Previously, the EC assured development partners that election preparations were progressing as per the timeline set by the government. British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke was among the foreign dignitaries who visited the EC offices recently to discuss election preparations.

Earlier, CEC Nasir confirmed that the commission was “fully prepared” for the national election and that no local government elections would be held before the parliamentary polls.

In his address on Victory Day, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus outlined a possible election timeline, suggesting that the parliamentary election could take place either in late 2025 or during the first half of 2026, depending on political consensus.
