Ex-Awami League MP Haji Salim Arrested

Haji Salim, a former MP for the Awami League, has been detained by police.

Obaidur Rahman, Dhaka’s additional deputy police commissioner (media), announced on Monday morning that Haji Salim had been taken into custody in relation to a murder case that had been filed at Lalbagh Police Station.

In 1996, Salim won his first election as an MP from the Dhaka-8 seat. In 2001, he was unsuccessful in his Awami League campaign against BNP opponent Nasir Uddin Ahmed Pintu.

After the Awami League was unable to nominate Salim, he entered the 2014 Dhaka-7 race as an independent. He defeated Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin of the Awami League in the contest and forged an alliance with sixteen other independent members of parliament.

He received the Awami League’s nomination in 2018 and was re-elected to the position.

After he was found guilty of corruption and given a 10-year prison term, his post was questioned. After being taken to jail, he was later freed on bond. In this year’s general election, he refrained from running.

Solaiman Mohammad Salim, his son, successfully ran for the Dhaka-7 seat on the Awami League ticket.
