A truck struck a firefighter who was attempting to put out a fire at the Secretariat, and the firefighter died from his injuries.
Md. Sohanur Zaman Nayan, the victim, was from Mithapukur in Rangpur. He was recently on duty at the Tejgaon Fire Station, even though his primary place of employment was the Biswanath Fire Station in Sylhet.
Talha Bin Jashim, a fire service official, reported a fire in the Secretariat’s Building No. 7 at 1:52 p.m. Within two minutes, firefighters arrived on the scene and started working to contain the fire.
Initially, eight units responded to the scene, and eleven more later joined the firefighting effort.
Nayan was crossing the street to try to connect a water pipe when a truck struck him and seriously injured him. Then the truck sped away.
Anwarul Islam, the Fire Service Warehouse Inspector, reported that they transported Nayan to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
At a press conference at 6:45 a.m. on Thursday, Brig. Gen. Muhammad Jahed Kamal, director general of the Department of Fire Service and Civil Defense, declared Nayan’s passing.
“After being transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with injuries, he passed away,” he stated.
The director general also reported that they had contained the fire at Building No. 7.
The fire affected floors 6, 7, 8, and 9, according to Jahed. We hope to extinguish the fire in about an hour.”
In 2022, Nayan became a member of the 61st batch of the Fire Service. He was from the village of Atpania in Mithapukur, Rangpur. Of his two siblings, the 24-year-old was the youngest.
