The first autologous bone marrow transplant (BMT) has been successfully completed at Evercare Hospital Chattogram in the port city.
The stem cell transplant was carried out on Farid Uddin Babar, 50, by Dr. Abu Zafar Mohammad Saleh and his team over the course of 12 days at Evercare Hospital Chattogram’s Hematology and BMT Centre.
According to a news conference held by the hospital on Monday, the transplant surgery started on January 19, and the patient will be released from the hospital on Tuesday.
During a bone marrow transplant, healthy blood-forming stem cells are infused into the patient’s body to replace the damaged bone marrow that isn’t creating enough healthy blood cells.
“We are happy to announce that Chattogram Evercare’s first autologous bone marrow transplant was successful. For the hospital and the residents of Chattogram, this marks a significant turning point. Patients are no longer required to leave the nation or fly to Dhaka for this life-saving treatment,” Dr. Abu Jafar Mohammed Saleh remarked.
He added that the BMT service in Chattogram will only cost Tk6,34,000, which is Tk2 lakh less than it does in Dhaka. “By adding BMT to our services, we are now able to provide patients the greatest healthcare at a much lesser cost, making it more accessible for everyone in need,” he said.
“Evercare has made large expenditures to bring about radical reforms in the port city’s healthcare system. Without further charges, a bone marrow transplant in Chennai costs ten lakh rupees,” said Dr. Abu Zafar.
Sameer Singh, the COO of Evercare Hospital Chattogram, spoke at the press conference and said, “Evercare has a social obligation even though we are a corporate organization. Patients in the area should know they don’t need to travel to Dhaka or Chennai, India, for better care.”
