As the Rafah gate to Egypt opened on Wednesday for the first time since the Hamas attacks on October 7, hundreds of foreign passport holders and injured people who were trapped in Gaza began to leave the conflict-torn region, according to AFP correspondents.
Relief supplies in dire need have traveled from Egypt to Gaza in convoys, but no one has been let to cross the Rafah border. Early on Wednesday, lines grew at the terminal, where it was anticipated that 545 foreign nationals and dual citizens and roughly 90 injured and ill people would depart.
Huge lines gathered around crossing booths to have their passports and other documents checked after being granted entry to the airport area.
On the Egyptian side, ambulances stood ready to transport the ill and injured.
Following the Hamas onslaught in Gaza, which Israeli authorities claim resulted in 1,400 deaths, most of them civilians, the area surrounding the facility was targeted by Israeli airstrikes. An additional 240 persons were held captive.
More than 15,000 people were injured in retaliatory Israeli strikes, which the Hamas-run health ministry claims have killed more than 8,500 people, two-thirds of them women and children. Some of these casualties are being transported to Egyptian hospitals for medical attention.
