Metropolis Desk-
Following a prolonged period of political unrest following the May general election, Thailand’s self-exiled former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra intends to return to the nation on Tuesday, according to his daughter.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra stated in a social media post that she would meet her father Thaksin on Tuesday, August 22, at 9:00 a.m. at Bangkok’s Don Muang Airport.
Originally scheduled to return on August 10, Thaksin postponed his trip to get a medical checkup.
The former telecom mogul, who served as president from 2001 until his overthrow in a coup in 2006, now lives in self-imposed exile after escaping Thailand in 2008 to escape serving a jail term for corruption. Even if he came back, he would still be in jail.
An additional vote in the parliament to elect the prime minister, who will be chosen by the Thaksin-supporting Pheu Thai Party, is also slated for Tuesday.
This month, the second-placed Pheu Thai gained control of government formation operations after the head of the election-winning Move Forward party was unsuccessful in becoming prime minister.
Pheu Thai requires the backing of the military-appointed Senate in addition to more than half of the bicameral legislature to nominate real estate billionaire Srettha Thavisin.
