Four Women Honored with Begum Rokeya Padak 2024

Four women received the esteemed Begum Rokeya Padak 2024 award in recognition of their outstanding contributions to women’s empowerment, education, and society.

The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs hosted a ceremony at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium today, where Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus presented the awards.

Bangladesh’s first female international chess master, Rani Hamid, was honored for her role in empowering women through sport; academic and human rights activist Parveen Hasan for her contribution to women’s education; women’s rights activist and founding member of Naripokkho Shireen Huq for women’s socio-economic development; and labor and women’s rights activist and photographer Taslima Akhter for her defense of women’s rights.

“This award is not for any recent accomplishments of the recipients,” Dr. Yunus stated during his remarks at the event. It honors their commitment, sense of responsibility, and the inspiration they have exemplified in their own lives, leading by example for the entire country.

He said he was proud to honor Begum Rokeya’s memory, whose vision and work continue to motivate generations to come.

Dr. Yunus conveyed his appreciation to those who carefully considered including her story in the textbooks.
