Following a collision with another vehicle in north-central Nigeria, a fuel tanker truck exploded on Sunday, killing at least 48 people, according to the state’s disaster management agency.

The fuel truck and a truck transporting tourists and cattle collided, according to the State Emergency Management Agency in north-central Niger state. It stated that a number of additional cars were involved in the collision.

48 people have died as a result of the incident, according to agency spokesperson Hussaini Ibrahim, and cleanup efforts are still ongoing.

Fuel shortages have persisted, causing drivers to wait in line for hours in the nation’s largest cities and towns. Last week, Nigeria’s state-owned company NNPC Ltd raised the price of gasoline by at least 39%—the second significant increase in more than a year.
