To dispel any doubts regarding the nation of origin, the German customs office is attempting to persuade Bangladesh to permit inspections of Bangladeshi bicycle factories.
The Bangladeshi mission in Berlin requested the visit about the subject of duties, and the recommendation was made in answer to that request.
The introduction of anti-dumping taxes and other levies is currently hurting Bangladesh’s sale of bicycles to Germany, which is the country’s major market.
Domestic bike exporters and manufacturers have asked the Ministry of Commerce to work closely with the Bangladeshi embassy in Berlin and the German embassy in Dhaka for the benefit of Bangladesh.
Bicycles’ provenance as coming from Bangladesh is being disputed by German customs, which could result in a loss of $30–40 million each year.
Industry sources claim there have been no violations of the laws of origin and that they are willing to assist with any inquiries.
Bicycle exporters have routinely won export awards for the past 20 years and are recognized with the EU’s recognized Exporter System (REX).
At US$ 167.5 million in FY 2021–2022, bicycle exports to EU nations have greatly increased. In FY 2020–2021, 1.0 million bicycles were exported worldwide.
