The European Union’s climate monitoring office stated on Thursday that the average worldwide temperatures at the beginning of June broke all prior records for the period by a “substantial margin.”
The announcement comes as the El Nino climate phenomenon has arrived in full force, causing heightened concerns about severe weather and additional temperature records.
Samantha Burgess, deputy director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), stated that the world had just seen the warmest early June on record. This came after a month of May that was just 0.1 degrees Celsius cooler than the warmest May on record.
Based on Copernicus, the first few days of June 2023 had global-mean surface air temperatures that were by far the greatest for the same period in the ERA5 data record. The unit’s data includes some records from 1950.
The world’s oceans were warmer last month than they have ever been in May, according to a recent report from Copernicus.
The organization stated that by the start of June, global temperatures had risen by more than 1.5C (34.7 degrees Fahrenheit), which is the most aggressive global warming target set by the 2015 Paris Agreement.
Between June 7 and June 11, the data show that the daily average global temperature was at or over the 1.5C threshold, peaking at 1.69C above it on June 9.
Although this is the first month that the cap has been surpassed, in recent years this restriction has been exceeded numerous times throughout the winter and spring.
Burgess pointed out that “every single fraction of a degree matters” to stop greater climate crisis impacts.
The COP28 climate summit, set to take place in Dubai at the end of the year, is being discussed at the UN-led climate talks in Bonn, Germany, where Copernicus is based.
