Around 15kg worth of gold bars, jewelry, and other valuables that were taken from travelers at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport are said to have vanished from the safe at the Dhaka Customs House.
According to a Dhaka Customs House employee who requested anonymity, an investigation into the situation has been opened. The spokesperson stated without going into any detail that a media briefing is scheduled for later.
There are four shifts of officers at the Dhaka Airport, according to sources at the Custom House. This gold is stored in a warehouse after being confiscated during these shifts.
AKM Nurul Huda Azad, the Commissioner of the Dhaka Custom House, recently gave instructions to put confiscated gold in separate lockers depending on “shift-basis” in order to increase transparency.
He instructed each shift to store their own portion of the gold that was seized in their own lockers. The commissioner learned about the missing 15 kg of gold from the warehouse about a week ago.
The warehouse’s gold was counted by a committee, which largely confirmed the accuracy of the information. Customs officials alone were not permitted entry into the customs warehouse, according to sources at the airport.
The facility at the airport is extremely safe, according to a representative of Dhaka Customs House. It is concerning when gold disappears from a location that is so secure.
“We feel embarrassed by this situation. To be sure, we are conducting an inventory check”. According to a senior member of the Dhaka Customs House. If the allegations are true, legal action would be taken and a complaint will be launched.
