Films produced in the languages of the Indian subcontinent may be imported under five criteria, including the export of Bangladeshi-produced films, according to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Saiful Islam, the Deputy Secretary (Films) for the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, issued an official directive in this regard on Tuesday.
However, the directive stated that a maximum of 10 movies might be imported in the first year in contrast to 10 movies exported.
The order stated that the Commerce Ministry’s view was sought after taking into account Sammilito Chalacchitro Parishad’s plea regarding the import of films made in languages of the Indian subcontinent.
According to the statement, imports of movies from SAFTA nations have been authorized in place of exports of Bangladeshi movies with the following restrictions on an experimental basis, according to the Commerce Ministry’s favorable response.
1. Only authorized movie makers and distributors will be permitted to import movies.
2. Against the export of Bangladeshi films, experimental imports of films with subtitling in sub-continental languages would be permitted for two years.
3. Ten movies may be imported in the first year in exchange for exports.
4. In order to screen imported movies, a certificate from the Bangladesh Film Censor Board is required.
5. Such movies cannot be shown during Bangladesh’s sacred Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and Durga Puja periods.
