Green chili prices have risen by 90% in the last four days and by 560–600% in the last two weeks, reaching an all-time high.
The surge is the result of persistent rain and a halt in imports caused by the Eid holiday.
11,600 tonnes of green chili from India may now be imported by private sector importers, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Rain and drought have severely impacted local production, which has resulted in a market shortage of green chili.
With only 0.128 million tonnes cultivated over the summer, the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics recorded 0.62 million tonnes of production of green chilies in 2022.
Red chili powder prices have increased by Tk 100–150 per kg during the past week as a result of the rise in green chili costs.
