Metropolis Report –
On neat patches of land of 6 acres, a fruit orchard startup “Green Venture Agro Limited” has been transforming the landscape of Sreeramkati village at Nazirpur Upazila of Pirojpur district with the modern “Intensive High-Density Planting Method”.
It ensures higher productivity in terms of quality and yield by manipulating the tree architecture and planting systems such as the use of dwarfing rootstock, intensive use of growth regulators, training, and pruning.
Talking about the benefit of this technology, co-founder Amit Halder told, “The main principle is to improve the efficiency of horizontal and vertical space utilization and resources and input utilization. There is a balance between the vegetative and fruiting structures without affecting the plant’s health. Advantages include increased productivity, high income, efficient use of resources, and mechanization and operational efficacy”.
Green Venture Agro Limited was formed amid the pandemic in 2020 by a group of 8 enthusiast corporates. At present, they have more than 3,000 plants of 42 types of fruits, both local and foreign varieties, in their orchard.
The orchard is now home to more than 1000 malta trees of 4 varieties, 380 mango trees of 31 varieties, 250 lemon trees of 4 varieties, 275 guava trees of 5 varieties, 104 orange trees of 8 varieties, and 100 pomegranate trees of 5 varieties along with exotic fruits like persimmon, soursop, avocado, mangosteen, and durian.
A fruit orchard like this can play a significant contribution to the ongoing debate about carbon footprints and global warming. Co-founder Amit Halder said, “According to our calculations, each acre of orchard releases 15 metric tonnes of oxygen by removing around 20 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year. It also generates more than 5 billion BTUs of cooling (equivalent to 4 lac and 16 thousand ton of cooling) energy.”
Farming organically, Green Venture Agro Limited has been able to harvest approximately 800 kg of fruits this year, which they have sold mostly through online platforms. They expect a higher yield every year from now on and are working towards an export-oriented business model.
