The High Court today requested a list of Bangladeshi migrant workers who lost their lives or suffered injuries while building hotels and stadiums in Qatar between 2010 and 2022 in preparation for the FIFA World Cup that took place there last year.
In response to a writ petition, the court ordered the ministries of foreign affairs, expatriates’ welfare, and overseas employment to compile a list of names of migrant workers from Bangladesh who were employed in constitution-related projects in Qatar and to present the list in front of the court.
The HC also issued a regulation requesting the relevant authorities to respond within four weeks with an explanation of why they should not be ordered to provide adequate compensation to the families of Bangladeshi migrant workers.
As a result of the petition submitted by Supreme Court attorney Masood R. Sobhan, the High Court bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Ahmed Sohel issued the ruling and rule.
He filed the petition in December last year, claiming that between 2010 and 2022, while building hotels and stadiums in Qatar in advance of the world cup, at least 450 Bangladeshi migrant laborers reportedly perished.
He claimed in the appeal that migrant laborers from Bangladesh were subjected to harsh treatment in Qatar.
According to Sobhan, he attached reports from the BBC and CNN about migrant workers’ fatalities and injuries in Qatar between 2010 and 2022 to the writ suit.
