Metropolis Report-
To ensure prisoners receive proper medical care, the High Court on Tuesday ordered the government to recruit doctors for 16 vacant positions in prisons nationwide.
The inspector general (IG) of prisons and the secretaries to the health and home ministries have been instructed to abide by the ruling and provide a compliance report to the court by June 6.
When the High Court’s bench of Justices KM Kamrul Kader and Mohammad Shawkat Ali Chowdhury heard a writ petition filed by SC attorney Md JR Khan Robin on February 18, 2019, seeking the required instructions on this matter, they issued the ruling.
The HC bench had previously received a report from the IG of the Prisons office, stating that 16 vacant doctor positions and a total of 125 deputized doctors had been filled in the prison system.
On November 15, the court ordered the government to fill vacant positions at the jails with deputized doctors who will treat inmates and submit a report once they have complied with the court’s ruling.
Shafiqul Islam, a lawyer for the IG prisons, appeared in place of deputy attorney general SK Saifuzzaman on behalf of the government.
