HRW urges Bangladesh to look into allegations of torture, enforced disappearances

Metropolis Report-

Human Rights Watch has urged Bangladesh to look into recent claims of torture and enforced disappearances, including those allegedly committed by the Detective Branch of the police.

According to Meenakshi Ganguly, the South Asia head of HRW, “Bangladesh has ignored repeated requests from the UN Committee Against Torture to follow up its recommendations, as necessary.”

She stated that among the committee’s recommendations was independent overseeing every detention site and a probe into any claims of torture or other ill-treatment by law enforcement personnel.

She said, “Bangladesh authorities should implement the recommendations by the Committee Against Torture, investigate claims, and hold perpetrators accountable,” in reference to the enhanced scrutiny and human rights sanctions the US government has placed on Bangladesh security forces.
