ICEC Report Underlines “Rotten Culture” of Sexism, Racism, and Elitism in English Cricket

Metropolis Desk-

Cindy Butts, the chair of the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC), claimed she heard “horrific” tales during an investigation into racism, sexism, and misogyny in cricket.

The assessment, according to Ms. Butts, discovered numerous problems with the English and Welch game.

She claimed that women were frequently stereotyped, denigrated, and subjected to predatory behavior.

“We heard from women who must enter scoreboxes and encounter signs that read “no bras permitted. We are in 2023, not 1923.

The ICEC issued a call for testimony for the Holding Up A Mirror To Cricket report, and more than 4,000 people answered.

The committee issued 44 recommendations, one of which was for the England and Wales Cricket Board to issue a public apology acknowledging the existence of, and the consequences of, racism, sexism, elitism, and class-based prejudice.

She said, “We heard from a former Muslim player who had to put up with his teammates’ mockery about one of the players using the prayer mat to clean up after sex.”

The anecdotes were “absolutely horrific,” which just proves how unhealthy cricket culture is.

According to Ms. Butts, women in the sport are considered “subordinate” to men and have experienced harassment.

Women are more vulnerable in drinking environments because they frequently experience sexual harassment and sexting, she said.

“We’ve heard from several women who talk about being exposed as well as how they’ve experienced unwanted advances from men,”

Richard Thompson, the chairman of the ECB, apologized and promised to “reset cricket” in a letter to the woman.

“Cricket should never exclude anyone based on their ethnicity, gender, or social background,” Mr. Thompson added.

“We sincerely apologize for these experiences and are grateful for the bravery of those who have shared them with the ICEC, while also acknowledging that there will be many more who felt unable to provide their accounts,” the statement reads.

One of the recommendations is for the wage system for women who play professionally to be completely overhauled, and another is for women to be equally represented in the English and Welsh cricket organizations’ governing structures.
