Parliament approved the Income-tax Ordinance Amendment Bill, 2023 with a few minor adjustments. The House rejected 80 amendments from opposition lawmakers in voice votes.
In the NBR, corruption is said to be rife, and Kazi Feroz Rashid and Fakhrul Imam contended that the provision for a 0.6 percent tax on foreign donations will make it more difficult for foreign aid and donations to come in.
Although the government is taking the chance of losing the $1 billion in foreign donations, it is levying a 0.6 percent tax on it.
The bill has drawn criticism from JP lawmakers Rawshan Ara Mannan Arafat and Shamim Haider Patwari.
According to AHM Mostafa Kamal, the minister of finance, there is room for revision to fill the bill’s inadequacies.
The House was presided over by Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in attendance.
