According to a local government official, a stepwell’s ceiling collapse in central India resulted in at least 35 fatalities and 16 injuries.
According to reports, the event happened in the state of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday as worshippers gathered in Indore to celebrate the Hindu holiday of Ram Navami.
Ilayaraja T, a key official in the local government, told the media on Friday, “We have rescued 18 people, 35 have been found dead, and 16 are injured.”
According to local media, at least 75 army and rescue troops spent the entire day clearing the area of debris and rescuing persons who had fallen into the well using ropes and ladders.
Television footage showed rescuers reaching individuals trapped in the well using ropes and ladders. Other videos showed the collapsed floor, bent steel bars, and police officers rope-sealing the space.
On the occasion of Ram Navami, the Hindu deity Ram’s birthday, temples all throughout India were packed with worshippers.
