India’s Transshipment Halt Won’t Cause Issues, Says Commerce Advisor

Commerce Advisor Sheikh Bashir Uddin has stated that India’s decision to discontinue transshipment facilities will not create difficulties for Bangladesh.

Indian media first reported the decision on Wednesday.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Bashir said, “Upon receiving the news, we immediately held discussions with all stakeholders, including Biman, civil aviation, and the private sector. I do not foresee any issues.”

Previously, the transshipment facility enabled the transport of 40,000-50,000 tonnes of goods to various Indian ports by road, with many shipments destined for Europe.

Bashir assured that necessary steps are being taken to maintain Bangladesh’s export competitiveness and logistical communication. “We are implementing measures to ensure there is no decline in our competitiveness, but I will not disclose the details at this time,” he added.

“We will strengthen our capacity by addressing structural and cost-related challenges,” he said.

When asked about potential countermeasures from Bangladesh, Bashir responded that his role is to enhance commercial capacity, not to engage in policy retaliation.

He reiterated that Bangladesh is focusing on expanding its own transportation capabilities for these goods.

Addressing the U.S. government’s three-month suspension of the additional 37 percent tariff on Bangladeshi products, Bashir said, “This decision will contribute to trade stability. There was an online meeting with the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) last night, and we are working according to our plan. A visit to the United States is likely soon to present our position.”

However, he emphasized that this is a temporary relief. “Their concerns remain, so we need to take a long-term approach. Our focus is on minimizing the trade deficit,” he concluded.
