Indonesia Prepares to Deploy Peacekeepers, Medical Personnel to Gaza

Prabowo Subianto, the incoming president of Indonesia, declared on Saturday that his nation was prepared to provide peacekeeping forces to uphold a ceasefire in Gaza if necessary.

Speaking at the largest security forum in Asia, the Shangri-La Dialogue, Prabowo said US

President Joe Biden’s three-phase proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza was a positive start.

“We are prepared to contribute significant peacekeeping forces to maintain and monitor this prospective ceasefire as well as provide protection and security to all parties and to all sides,” Prabowo stated in response to a request from the UN.

In October, the 72-year-old former commander of special forces and current defense minister of Indonesia will assume the presidency of the largest Muslim country in the world.

He stated that he was directed by President Joko Widodo to declare that Indonesia was prepared to “evacuate, receive, and treat with medical care up to 1,000 patients” from Gaza.

Amidst the conflict in November, an Indonesian non-governmental organization operated the Indonesia Hospital in Gaza.

Prabowo said that in addition to a “just solution” to the Palestinian problem, a thorough probe of the humanitarian catastrophe in the Rafah sector of Gaza was required.

“And that entails the rights of the Palestinian people to live in peace and have their own state and homeland in addition to Israel’s right to exist.”
