Inflation Dips Slightly in December, Still Remains in Double Digits

Inflation in Bangladesh slightly decreased to 10.89 percent in December, the last month of the year, but it remained in double digits. This means that a basket of goods that cost Tk 100 in December 2023 would now cost Tk 108.90 in December 2024.

The inflation rate was 11.38 percent in November. While this is a slight drop from the previous month, it is still higher than the 10.87 percent recorded in October.

The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) released these updated point-to-point inflation figures on Monday. The data revealed that the average inflation rate for the entire year of 2024 was 10.34 percent, an increase from 9.48 percent in 2023.

Both food and non-food inflation saw slight declines in December compared to November. Food inflation dropped from 13.80 percent in November to 12.92 percent in December, while non-food inflation decreased from 9.39 percent to 9.26 percent.

Inflation rates also eased in both urban and rural areas. The urban inflation rate fell from 11.37 percent in November to 10.84 percent in December, while rural inflation dipped from 11.53 percent to 11.09 percent.
