Marcus Thuram and Hakan Calhanoglu scored as Inter Milan secured a 2-1 victory over Feyenoord in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at San Siro on Tuesday, advancing to the quarter-finals with a 4-1 aggregate win.
Inter, currently leading Serie A, will face Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, who triumphed 5-0 on aggregate against Bayer Leverkusen, in the upcoming quarter-finals next month.
Inter, who last won the prestigious title in 2010 by defeating Bayern in the final during a treble-winning season, remain on track to replicate that achievement, with a Coppa Italia semi-final also set for April.
Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther had an early test, failing to hold a Henrikh Mkhitaryan shot but recovering to gather a header from Carlos Augusto after a corner. Aymen Sliti, making his senior debut for Feyenoord, attempted a long-range effort, but Inter’s Yann Sommer easily collected the ball.
With Feyenoord trailing 2-0 from the first leg, Thuram’s stunning solo goal in the eighth minute left them with little hope. He gathered the ball on the left wing, cut inside, and expertly curled a shot into the top corner.
Inter looked to extend their lead as Mehdi Taremi’s shot was blocked, but Feyenoord pulled one back just before halftime with Jakub Moder converting a penalty after Calhanoglu fouled him.
However, Inter quickly regained their advantage when Calhanoglu made up for his earlier mistake by scoring a penalty in the 51st minute after Thomas Beelen fouled Taremi.
Feyenoord pushed forward in search of another goal, leaving them vulnerable on the counter, and although Inter seemed to have won another penalty, VAR overturned it, and Thuram was booked for simulation. He received a standing ovation from the crowd when substituted after hitting the underside of the crossbar with a powerful shot.
Inter comfortably held onto their lead to seal the win.
