Interpol Issues Red Notice for Former Bangladesh Police Chief Benazir Ahmed Over Corruption Allegations

Interpol has issued a red notice for Benazir Ahmed, the former inspector general of police (IGP), who is currently residing abroad while facing numerous serious charges, including extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, murder, and corruption.

The notice was issued on April 10, according to Assistant Inspector General Enamul Haque Sagar of the Police Headquarters’ Public Relations and Media Wing, who spoke to bdnews24.com on Tuesday.

However, Benazir’s name and photo have not yet been posted on Interpol’s official website.

“Most red notices are restricted and only accessible to law enforcement agencies,” Sagar explained. “Once certain formalities are completed, Benazir Ahmed’s name will be listed on Interpol’s website.”

This marks the first time Interpol has issued a red notice for a former IGP of Bangladesh.

Benazir served as the country’s police chief from April 2020 to September 2022. Before that, he led the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from January 2015 to April 2020.
