A gas explosion in a coal mine in Iran’s South Khorasan Province has resulted in at least 28 fatalities and 17 injuries, as reported by state television on Sunday. Additionally, 24 individuals are still unaccounted for.
The incident, attributed to a methane gas explosion in two sections of the mine operated by the Madanjoo company, occurred while 69 workers were present.
Seventeen injured workers have been taken to the hospital, while the search continues for the 24 missing persons, according to the head of Iran’s Red Crescent.
The explosion happened at 9 PM (1730 GMT) on Saturday, as reported by state media.
President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, stating, “I have spoken with ministers, and we will do our utmost to follow up on this situation,” during televised remarks.
