Italy’s Most Wanted Mafia Boss Matteo Messina Denaro Passes Away

Metropolis Desk-

After a battle with cancer, Italy’s most wanted mob boss Matteo Messina Denaro passes away.

Many Mafia-related murders are believed to have been ordered by Denaro for the Cosa Nostra crime organization.

According to the BBC, Italian Mafia leader Matteo Messina Denaro, who was captured in January after 30 years on the lam, passed away on Monday. Having had colon cancer treatment in the San Salvatore hospital in L’Aquila, central Italy, Denaro passed away there. He was moved from the maximum-security jail in central Italy where he was initially detained to the hospital when his condition deteriorated in recent weeks.

Pierluigi Biondi, the mayor of L’Aquila, announced the mobster’s passing in a hospital “following a worsening of his illness.” According to Mr. Biondi, his death “puts an end to a saga of blood and violence. He continued, “It was the epilogue of an existence lived without regret or repentance, a painful chapter of our nation’s recent history.”

Denaro was found guilty of his part in the 1992 assassinations of anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. Denaro is believed to have ordered other Mafia-related murders for the Cosa Nostra criminal organization. He was also blamed for the 1993 explosions in Rome, Florence, and Milan that left 10 people dead.

His kidnapping and subsequent murder of the 12-year-old son of a Falcone case witness resulted in one of his six life sentences.

Denaro, referred to in the Italian media as “The Last Godfather,” had boasted that he could “fill a cemetery” with his victims. For the powerful Cosa Nostra organized crime syndicate, he managed racketeering, illicit garbage dumping, money laundering, and drug trafficking as well. The Guardian claims that Messina Denaro’s enormous wealth stemmed from his investments in waste and energy and his successful espionage of the local government to get control of significant construction contracts.

He was also regarded as the Cosa Nostra’s final “secret keeper,” as he had all the details and the identities of individuals responsible for many of the Mafia’s most notorious crimes.

According to Sky News, he never wed but was known to have a lot of lovers.

According to AFP, the 61-year-old has been hiding out since the Italian government cracked down on the Sicilian mob in 1993. He continued to be the most wanted man in Italy and his fame grew. He was apprehended because he chose to receive cancer treatment. In January 2023, he was apprehended in front of a private medical facility in Palermo, the city of Sicily.

The mobster will be interred alongside his father, Don Ciccio, at the family tomb in the town, according to the Corriere della Sera newspaper.
