Classes and examinations at Jagannath University (JnU) remained suspended for the second consecutive day due to a student-led shutdown aimed at pushing their three-point demands.
The demands include transferring the second campus project to the army for timely completion, providing temporary accommodation for students, and arranging housing allowances for at least 70 percent of students until temporary housing becomes available.
JnU students, who had been on a hunger strike to press for their demands, ended their protest yesterday evening, 35 hours after authorities assured them that two of their demands would be addressed. However, they decided to continue their boycott of classes and exams.
Since the morning, no classes or exams have been conducted in any department of the university, according to students.
AKM Rakib, a student from the Botany Department, stated that the shutdown would persist until their demands were met.
Speaking to The Daily Star, Hafizur Rahman, a computer operator at the Student Welfare Office, mentioned, “The presence of students on campus is very low. Administrative operations are continuing at a limited scale.”
A notice issued by the education ministry yesterday assured that the first two demands would be considered at a meeting of the steering committee for the second JnU campus project, scheduled to take place at the Secretariat tomorrow.
