In response to a commenter’s suggestion that Russia should detonate a thermonuclear bomb, the Kremlin said on Tuesday that the country had not abandoned its ban on nuclear testing.
Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman, said he was unaware of where New York Times reporters had learned that Russia might be preparing to test or may have already tested an experimental nuclear-powered cruise missile.
In an excerpt from an interview published online by the foreign-based digital broadcast network RTVI, hardline editor-in-chief of the state-owned broadcaster RT Margarita Simonyan urged that Russia explode a nuclear weapon over Siberia at a great height as a warning to the West.
