The Cabinet has approved the draft of the Bangladesh Labour (Amendment) Act, 2023, increasing maternity leave to 120 days from 112 days (16 weeks).
The new law allows female workers to avail 16 weeks of maternity leave, eight weeks before and eight weeks after a baby’s birth.
The draft also eases the condition for forming a trade union, requiring 20% of workers’ signatures for companies with over 3,000 employees and 20% for companies with less than 3,000 employees.
The Labour Appeal Tribunal’s decision can be challenged in the Appellate Division, not the High Court Division.
The Cabinet also approved the draft of the Payra-Kuakata Development Authority Act, 2023.
