The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that people’s lack of vigilance against Covid could lead to the emergence of deadly new strains of the virus. The WHO Director-General issued such a warning on Friday (December 2).
“Flaws in the Covid response strategy this year continue to create the conditions for the emergence of a deadly new variant,” he said. “Some regions in China have witnessed increased cases of infection.”
Earlier, he expressed optimism that the end of the coronavirus was in sight last September. But within a few months, there was a change in his words. On Friday, he said, “The pandemic emergency is over. We are now very close to saying that. But there is no way to say that the epidemic is over.”
In addition to China, new infections have recently started to rise in parts of the UK. The WHO has urged governments worldwide to focus on vaccinating vulnerable people over 60.
