Metropolis Report-
Six members of the European Parliament (MEP) have asked Josep Borrell Fontelles, high representative and vice-president of the EU, to oversee free, fair, and impartial general elections in Bangladesh.
They also demanded that human rights abuses stop, that Begum Khaleda Zia be released, and that the government works with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and other significant political parties to find a lasting and democratic solution to the current crisis.
The letter, according to EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Charles Whiteley, represents the opinions of the six MEPs who signed it.
As a long-term partner in trade and development cooperation, the EU has good reasons to support the people of Bangladesh.
The letter mentions potential actions like restricting entry into the EEA zone for those who are accountable for and complicit in human rights abuses, or regular reminders of the requirements for the GSP+ incentive to which Bangladesh is a bidder may be evaluated.
