Metropolis Desk-
Francis Kateh, the chief medical officer of Liberia, reported on Wednesday that at least 40 people had perished as a result of the explosion of a gas tanker in the country’s north-central region.
Many people who had gathered at the scene were killed and injured when the fuel truck burst shortly after it crashed late on Tuesday in Totota, Lower Bong County.
According to Kateh, there are still dozens of patients in the hospital with severe burns, and the number of fatalities may grow.
Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest crash fatality rate in the world, three times higher than the average for Europe, owing to poor road safety and inadequate infrastructure, according to United Nations statistics.
