Lt Gen Waker-Uz-Zaman Appointed as New Army Chief

The Chief of Army Staff will be Lieutenant General Waker-Uz-Zaman, OSP, SGP, psc, Chief of General Staff (CGS), who has been promoted to general status. 

He was named the Army chief on June 23 and will serve in that capacity for three years, according to an ISPR press statement.

He will take over for General Shafiuddin Ahmed, the current head of the army. 

On January 1, 2024, Lieutenant General Waker-Uz-Zaman took over as the Bangladesh Army’s Chief of General Staff.

The general, who attended Bangladesh Military Academy, was commissioned on December 20, 1985, into the Corps of Infantry. 

Lieutenant General Waker brings with him a wealth of experience having held important staff, command, and instructional positions over his storied and colorful 35-year career. 

Lieutenant General Waker led an infantry division, the sole independent infantry brigade in the Bangladesh Army, and an infantry battalion during his illustrious military career.

Among his most important staff appointments are staff officers at Army Headquarters, the School of Infantry and Tactics, and an Infantry Brigade. 

He was a famous teacher at the Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operations Training, the Non-commissioned Officers’ Academy, and the School of Infantry and Tactics. 

Army Headquarters employed Lieutenant General Waker as its military secretary. 

He served as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s chief staff officer at the Armed Forces Division within the Prime Minister’s Office before enlisting in the Bangladesh Army as a CGS. 

Lieutenant General Waker attended the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the United Kingdom as well as the Defence Services Command and Staff College in Mirpur.

He graduated with a Master of Arts in Defense Studies from King’s College, University of London, and a Master of Science in Defense Studies from the National University of Bangladesh. 

He had direct access to the Bangladeshi Armed Forces’ UN Peacekeeping operations as head of the Armed Forces Division. 

Additionally, he was put forth for nomination as Bangladesh’s Gender Advocate and Champion for UN Peacekeeping. 

He served as chairman of the “Bangladesh National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention” by virtue of his appointment as principal staff officer. 

Lieutenant General Waker served two tours of service with the Blue Helmet, one as staff in UNMIL (Liberia) and the other as an observer in UNAVEM (Angola).

He oversees military operations, military intelligence, UN peacekeeping missions, the army budget, and numerous other matters as the CGS of the Bangladesh Army. 

For three years in a row, Lieutenant General Waker had the unique honor of leading the National Victory Day Parade. 

He received the highly sought-after “Army Medal of Glory (SGP)” and the Extraordinary Service Medal (OSP) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the army’s modernization. 

He frequently gives the opening address at various symposiums and seminars both domestically and overseas. 

He likes sports and games. With two kids, Samiha Raisa Zaman and Shayeera Ibnat Zaman, he is blissfully married to Sarahnaz Kamalika Zaman.
