Maya Civilization: Archaeologists Discover Ancient City in Forest

Metropolis Desk-

Mexican archaeologists have found the ruins of a long-gone Maya city buried deep within the Yucatán Peninsula’s jungle.

Experts discovered seven pyramid-like buildings that were taller than 15 meters (50 feet).

The site was apparently inhabited between 600 and 800 AD, during the Late Classic period, according to pottery discovered there.

The location has been given the Mayan name Ocomtn by archaeologists.

The Maya, who lived in what is now southern Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize, is regarded as one of the greatest civilizations in the Western Hemisphere. They are most known for their pyramid temples and enormous stone structures.

These most recent remains were discovered in a state of Campeche natural reserve, an area so overgrown with flora that it has received little attention.

It was found, according to Mexico’s National Institute for History (INAH), as a consequence of fieldwork intended to record the archaeology of the Central Maya Lowlands, a region covering 3,000 sq km of deserted rainforest.

According to INAH, “numerous concentrations of pre-Hispanic structures” were discovered by the research team thanks to airborne laser scanning performed by the University of Houston.

The team’s leader, Ivan Sprajc, stated that they were most taken aback by the finding of an elevated landscape surrounded by marshes.

They discovered a number of enormous structures on that steep ground, including numerous buildings with pyramidal shapes that were over 15 meters in height.

According to Mr. Sprajc, the location “would have served as an important regional center,” according to a statement issued by INAH.

According to him, the entrances to the apartments in the top parts of the buildings were likely the cylindrical stone columns that gave the site its name, Ocomtn.

The site likely underwent significant modifications between 800 and 1000 AD, according to Mr. Sprajc, ultimately succumbing to the demise of the Lowland Maya civilization in the tenth century.
