Motiur Rahman Dismissed from NBR Amid Goat Scandal

Transferred from the National Board of Revenue is revenue official Motiur Rahman, whose son gained notoriety for buying a goat for Eid-ul-Azha.

The National Board of Revenue’s Customs, Excise, and VAT Appellate Tribunal president, Mortiur Rahman, has been attached to the Ministry of Finance’s Internal Resources Division, according to a notice released on Sunday regarding the case.

None of his new duties were mentioned in the order that Deputy Secretary Makima Begum signed.

“Motiur Rahman will be assigned to the Internal Resources Division as an officer on special duty (OSD),” an NBR official informed bdnews24.com. There are no new duties assigned to him. Senior authorities are awaiting additional directives.

Mushfiqur Rahman Ifat, the son of Motiur, became viral on social media after he wrote on Facebook about spending Tk 1.5 million on a goat for Eid-ul-Azha. People started bringing up his father when they were curious about how he made his money.

In 1994, Motiur began working for the government as an officer in the 11th BCS (Customs and Excise).

Motiur held positions as VAT commissioner, Chattogram Customs and Large Taxpayer Unit (LTU), and the Bangladesh Commercial Council in Brussels before to being appointed to the tribunal.

The Anti-Corruption Commission has looked into him for graft during the course of his thirty-year career.

He stated the following in an interview with a pay TV station:

“The ACC has conducted four investigations into me and has determined that I did not participate in any corrupt activities.”

Apart from his work for the government, Motiur is a businessman who has made stock market investments. Speaking of his enormous wealth, Motiur stated:

“I own stock in many companies that collectively possess 300 acres of land. I own shares in a few factories. However, neither the 300 acres nor the factories are entirely mine. Our family has only made investments.”

Motiur is a government-nominated director of the state-owned Sonali Bank and was a student in the Department of Finance at Dhaka University.

He was named a director of Sonali Bank by the Ministry of Finance on February 1, 2022, for a three-year tenure.
