Nearly 30 Factories in Ashulia Shut Down Amid Labor Unrest

Today, workers’ rallies in the Ashulia industrial district led over thirty garment manufacturers to announce their closure.

Authorities were forced to close 30 firms when workers chose to walk out rather than report for duty, according to Mohammad Sarwar Alam, superintendent of Ashulia Industrial Police-1.

He continued, “Six people from the Pukurpar area were detained for questioning on suspicion of trying to create chaos in the RMG sector.”

Sarwar stated that, save from a few isolated incidences, the industrial area’s condition was normal this afternoon.

The majority of factories reopened today in accordance with the BGMEA’s decision, but 30 factory workers began to demonstrate, claiming their discussions with the authorities over a number of demands had not been “fruitful”.

Up until eleven a.m., everything went as usual. However, as the day went on and the workers staged protests either inside or outside the factories, tensions grew.

The factories were later closed by the government, according to industrial police officials.

In the Pukurpar neighborhood of the Ashulia industrial region, a group of laborers stopped the Jirabo-Bishmail road in front of multiple factories at around 11:30 a.m.

Later, the BGB, the police, and the army arrived and dispersed the demonstrators.

Six individuals were being held at the time on suspicion of being outsiders encouraging the violence.

Our journalist visited the area and discovered that the detainees were seated in front of a garment factory gate, encircled by BGB, police, and army personnel.

The journalist claimed, citing the industrial police, that they were being questioned.

BGB, police, and army officials were attempting to maintain regular traffic on the route.

The other factories, meanwhile, continued to run normally. Police noted that the employees claimed they started working since the proprietors granted most of their requests.

A friendly work environment, equal representation of men and women in the apparel industry, and longer maternity leave are just a few of the demands that the workers have been voicing through their protests.
