After months of teasing plans to create a ChatGPT competitor, Elon Musk on Wednesday announced the launch of a new artificial intelligence-focused firm. The firm, xAI, presented a website and a workforce of twelve employees. The website for the new business states that Musk will serve as its CEO and that it “will work closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies to make progress towards our mission.”

According to the website, “The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe,” which is language Musk has previously used to characterize his AI ambitions.

Musk initially supported the startup that developed ChatGPT, OpenAI, but later attacked it for adding protections to stop the popular chatbot from responding in an unfavorable or sexist manner.

Musk wrote in December in response to a question from a Twitter user asking OpenAI’s CEO if it was possible to “turn off the woke settings” on ChatGPT: “The hazard of training AI to be woke – in other words, lie – is terrible. Musk revealed plans for his new AI firm in an interview with Tucker Carlson, who was hosting Fox News at the time, in April. He announced, “We’re going to start something that I call TruthGPT,” which he defined as a “maximum truth-seeking AI” that “cares about understanding the universe.”

A few months ago, Musk cautioned in an interview that he believed AI may lead to “civilization destruction” and joined other industry leaders in calling for a halt to an “out of control” AI race. Now, Musk has announced the launch of a new firm.

There weren’t many other facts available about the company’s goals right away, although the website states that hiring is ongoing. The twelve employees listed on the website right now all seem to be male.

Musk is in a perilous position right now with the launch of his newest endeavor.

After Meta released a competing software called Threads, Twitter, the business he purchased for $44 billion in October, now faces an unclear future. In little than a week, Meta’s app had over 100 million new users sign up. There were numerous reports of a decline in Twitter usage in the meanwhile.

The turmoil at Twitter has been building for months as Musk has alienated some users and advertisers by cutting staff, enacting contentious policy changes, and making a series of inflammatory statements.

Musk is the CEO of several businesses in addition to Twitter, including Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company.
