Flooding in Nigeria’s Niger State has claimed 151 lives and displaced more than 3,000 people, according to a statement on Saturday by Ibrahim Audu Hussaini, Director of Information at the Niger State Emergency Management Agency.
The updated toll marks a significant increase from the 117 deaths reported on Friday. Hussaini said over 500 households had been affected by the floods.
The disaster struck the central town of Mokwa on Wednesday night and continued into Thursday morning. Rescue teams remained on the scene days later, searching through mud and debris for additional victims.
Nigeria frequently experiences severe flooding during its rainy season, which began in April. In 2022, the country witnessed its worst flooding in over a decade, leaving more than 600 dead, displacing 1.4 million people, and destroying over 440,000 hectares of farmland.
