The government has given its approval to begin importing onions as of tomorrow. The Ministry of Agriculture stated in a press release that the abrupt increase in onion prices was the reason the license was given.
To import onions, a permit is needed from the Department of Agriculture Extension. The government temporarily stopped the import of onions after taking the needs of the farmers into account.
Meanwhile, onion prices are increasing at an unusual rate in the country’s market. In a span of two months, the price has increased almost three times.
According to the press release, the choice was made to safeguard the interests of workers and those with low incomes.
