Rescuers hurried to begin searching through debris on Tuesday after an earthquake in northwest China caused buildings to collapse, resulting in at least 111 fatalities, according to official media.
The strong, shallow earthquake in Gansu province caused about 100 fatalities and numerous injuries, according to state broadcaster CCTV, which cited the provincial earthquake relief headquarters.
In the nearby province of Qinghai, in the city of Haidong, there were 100 injuries and 11 more fatalities, as reported by CCTV. People were forced to flee into the street in search of safety after the earthquake caused significant damage, including collapsed houses, according to state news agency Xinhua.
Early on Tuesday, rescue operations got underway. Chinese President Xi Jinping urged “all-out efforts” in the search and relief efforts as well as making sure that the survivors and their belongings are safe.
The US Geological Survey recorded the magnitude of the earthquake as 5.9. Haidong is located in Gansu, close to the Qinghai border.
The epicenter is located roughly 60 miles (100 km) southwest of Lanzhou, the provincial capital of Gansu. The initial earthquake was followed by several smaller aftershocks.
The earthquake’s magnitude was 6.2, according to Xinhua. It was felt in Xi’an, in the northern Shaanxi province, about 570 kilometers (350 miles) away.
