Ferdousi Priyabhashini saw the doom’s day with bare eyes. Held as a captive by the Pakistani occupation force during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971, she was raped by countless officers for countless days. An unforgettable nightmare hung in her brain forever as the sight of naked, raped bodies of women in a Pakistani army camp was too stubborn to be left out. Decades went by, but the long, beastly canine teeth of a fifty-up commander, through which maniacal laughter emerged, never escaped her memory till her deathbed.
Ferdousi’s story could end like many other victim ladies whose ordeals were buried with them. But, following the victory of Bangladesh over Pakistan on December 16, 1971, she made her stories public, and her harrowing accounts and vivid details of the diabolic torture gave the posterity a glimpse of the biggest genocide since the time of the Holocaust. The military officers of Pakistan violated more than two million women, and the reason behind the wholesale rape was not just sudden compulsive carnal pleasure. It was driven by the order issued by the military generals to annihilate Bengali as a nation.
Rape was used as a weapon to destroy Bengalis and Hindus. While the army officers routinely charged into people’s houses and raped women in front of their husbands or parents, they resorted to another method, which was even worse – taking women to the camp and holding them captive for months. It testifies to the fact that rape was ordered and masterminded by the top level of the armed forces hierarchy. Around 200,000 to 400,000 women fell prey to the notorious scheme of Pakistani soldiers during the nine-month war in 1971. A brilliant piece of work conducted in exposing the wholesale rape incidents was by Bina D Costa, a researcher interviewing Dr. Davis, who treated rape victims through abortions in post-independence Bangladesh. The most authentic witness to the rape victims referred to 100 abortions in Dhaka per day and variable numbers in other parts of Bangladesh.
Though the world took note of the genocide owing to articles by journalists and academic research, the genocide starting on March 25, 1971, had long been denied recognition from global bodies. However, the US-based Lemkiln Institute, named after Professor Lemkiln widely acclaimed for coining the term “genocide”, has recently incorporated a chapter on the genocide carried out by the Pakistan Army in Bangladesh in 1971.
Coming hot on the heels of the approval is a resolution placed before the US House of Representatives to recognize the genocide. Once it has been accepted, Bangladesh can aspire for the next stage, the official status from the United Nations. It implies that the diabolic level of murder and torture, set in motion by Pakistan on Bangladesh fifty years ago, which came out vividly through the George Harrison song Bangladesh and Allen Ginsberg poem September on Jessore Road, is now getting admitted by worldwide institutions as well.
It is disheartening that the violation of women is often lost under the weight of other issues such as the mass murder conducted by the Pakistan army and the superheroic role of freedom fighters in resisting genocide. However, a recently published book by the Pakistan army’s Major General Khadim Hossain Raja presented some of the most explosive pieces of information hitherto unknown. In the book named “A Stranger in my Own Land”, he wrote, “To our consternation, Niazi became abusive and started raving. Breaking into Urdu, he said: “Main is haramzadi qaum ki nasal badal doon ga. Yeh mujhe kiya samajhtey hain”.
“He threatened that he would let his soldiers loose on their womenfolk. There was pin-drop silence at these remarks. Officers looked at each other in silence, taken aback by his vulgarity. The meeting dispersed on this unhappy note with sullen faces. The next morning, we were given sad news. A Bengali officer, Major Mushtaq, who had served under me in Jessore, went into a bathroom at the Command Headquarters and shot himself in the head. He died instantaneously. A brilliant officer, he was dignified and self-respecting. I knew the officer well and his memory will always live with me. It is a pity that he should have been the first casualty of Niazi’s words and deeds”.
The genocide in Bangladesh, especially the unprecedented level of rape, is too true to be pushed aside as undeniable facts and figures are bearing out the inhumane torture the Pakistan army inflicted on Bangladesh. The good news is that the world is acknowledging it, slowly but surely! Global bodies must recognize it to restore people’s faith in humanity.
