Payra Power Plant Likely to Stop Production Due to Scarcity of Coal

Metropolis Report-

A 660-megawatt unit of the Payra power station was forced to be shut down on May 25 due to a scarcity of coal, which was the first in the plant’s three years of operation.

If current conditions continue, the other unit of the plant will cease functioning in about a week. For the whole Barishal region as well as portions of Khulna and Dhaka, the Payra 1,320MW Thermal Power Plant has been a dependable supply of electricity.

There are only about 50,000 tonnes of coal in storage at the nation’s largest coal-fired power plant, according to sources, and the two units each need about 6,000 tonnes every day. They note that the second 660MW unit will also cease operations after about a week.

The power plant is run by Bangladesh-China Power Company Ltd (BCPCL), and the coal is purchased by China National Machinery Import and Export Company (CMC), which owns a 50% stake in the facility.

After paying for coal shipments, CMC receives payment from Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) six months later. The CMC prohibited the supply of coal to the Payra power plant, the BCPCL stated in a letter dated April 27 to the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, the PDB, and Bangladesh Bank.

The letter stated that the coal supply would not resume until the debts were cleared.
