Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday launched a new intercity train called Chilahati Express to improve the connection between the northern region and the capital.
She participated virtually from her official residence Ganabhaban, blowing a whistle and waving a flag during a ceremony conducted at Chilahati Railway Station in Nilphamari as the primary guest.
The new Chilahati Express would travel the Dhaka-Chilahati-Dhaka route six days per week, with a capacity to carry 800 people and modern amenities.
Asaduzzaman Noor, a legislator from Nilphamari-2, as well as other local MPs, were present at the event from Chilahati end in Nilphamari, where railways minister Nurul Islam Sujan addressed.
The occasion was directed by principal secretary Tofazzel Hossain Miah, and the welcome address was given by railroads secretary Muhammad Humayun Kabir from the Ganabhaban end.
