On Friday (November 11), the Supreme Court of India ordered the release of all six convicts serving life imprisonment in the assassination case. The list includes Nalini Sriharan, Ravichandran, Shanthan, Murugan, Robert Payas, and Jayakumar.
Another convict, Perarivalan, serving a life sentence in this case, was released by the Supreme Court in May this year.
Other convicts, including Nalini, have been sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. They have been imprisoned for 23 years.
On May 21, 1991, the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was killed in a suicide bomb attack at an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
It was later learned that a female suicide bomber named Dhanu of the Sri Lankan Tamil rebel group LTTE blew herself up with a bomb. The court found seven people guilty in the incident and ordered the death penalty.
The accused begged the President for life. In 2014, the Supreme Court commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment due to the delay in the decision.
Meanwhile, in an official statement, Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh denounced this decision and said this is unacceptable.
