Russia has reiterated its claims that certain foreign entities attempted to sway the results of last week’s general elections in Bangladesh, initially labeling the opposition parties’ boycott of the voting process as “unfortunate”.
International and Russian observers have affirmed the legitimacy of the parliamentary elections scheduled for January 7th, according to a statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Friday in Moscow.
She continued by saying that “their compliance with generally accepted standards” has also been confirmed by regional, global, and Russian observers. Andrey Yuryevich Shutov, a member of the Russian Federation Central Election Commission (CEC), headed the Russian delegation, Zakharova said.
The Russian envoy expressed regret that “some opposition political parties had not participated in the elections.”
She cited Russia’s statements from November 22 and December 15 of last year in her assertion that there were “attempts to influence the electoral process from abroad”.
“We should pay tribute to the Bangladeshi leadership, who were able to create the necessary conditions for the voters to freely express their will,” the statement continued.
“On this occasion, we would like to congratulate the people of Bangladesh on the successful elections,” Zakharova stated.
Additionally, Sheikh Hasina received congratulations from President Vladimir Putin on her fourth consecutive term in office.
Earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping felicitated Hasina.
