Russia slammed US and EU politicians for pressing Bangladesh to hold free and fair elections, calling their actions neocolonialism and intervention in the internal affairs of a sovereign state.
The letters were judged to be blatant interference, the Russian foreign ministry tweeted. Six US legislators demanded immediate action to address violations of human rights and guarantee free and fair parliamentary elections.
The EU High Representative Joseph Borrell was also urged by members of the European Parliament to help Bangladesh hold free, fair, and impartial general elections.
Additionally, Democratic congressmen asked for measures to guarantee Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections will be free and fair.
On anyone responsible for or involved in disrupting the democratic election process in Bangladesh, as well as their immediate families, the US announced visa restrictions.
